The fifth grade religion curriculum is organized around the Seven Sacraments. This material is covered in our textbook, Spirit of Truth: The Sacraments (Sophia Institute Press, 2017.) Our learning is enriched by recognizing and celebrating the lives of the Saints.We worship together at weekly Mass and Eucharistic Adoration, regularly receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and participate in seasonal devotions like the Rosary and Stations of the Cross throughout the year. Finally, we participate in service projects at various times during the school year.

5th Grade Mathematics

The learning standards for 5th grade math lead students to learn and expand their knowledge of:

  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking (writing and interpreting numerical expressions, analyzing patterns and relationships);
  • Numbers and Operations in Base 10 (understanding the place value system, performing operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths);
  • Numbers and Operations—Fractions (using equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions, applying and extending previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions);
  • Measurement (converting like measurement units within a given measurement system, representing and interpreting data, understanding the geometric measurement concepts of volume and how volume relates to multiplication and to addition); and
  • Geometry (graphing points on the coordinate plane to solve real work mathematical problems, classifying two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.)

The textbook is Go Math! (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2015.) Interactive Math Journals are also used as a tool in our classroom to allow students to become independent problem solvers.

Language Arts

Reading – Using text sources published by Houghton Mifflin as well as novel studies, we concentrate on comprehension strategies, vocabulary work and various literary genres. These concepts and skills are presented through both shared reading and guided reading experiences, followed by whole group and small group instruction. Through our unique RINGO program, students work on independent reading skills, including goal setting and tracking genres.Students are expected to read outside of the classroom every day and may choose their own reading materials, including chapter books, magazines, informational text, graphic novels, etc.

Writing—Through the fifth grade Writer’s Workshop, students work at their own pace to create poetry, narratives and essays. Grammar and spelling practice are incorporated into Writer’s workshop and supplemented weekly by short grammar lessons and assessments (e.g., kinds of nouns, subject-verb agreement, direct objects, etc.) and differentiated spelling lists.Our grammar and writing work is supplemented with exercises from Voyages in English (Loyola Press, 2011.)Spelling and word work follows the strategies of Words Their Way (Pearson, 2015.)

Throughout fifth grade, students study the following areas of science:

  • Life science-botany,
  • Earth science-ecology, and
  • Physical science-matter/states of matter.

We experience the beauty of science by building models, observing experiments, and understanding the different properties found in God's universe.

A tech-book and online resources from Discovery Education™ are used.

Social Studies

In fifth grade social studies we study American History. The areas of focus are:

  • The Land and Early People - geography review and Native American people
  • Cultures Meet - The Age of Exploration
  • The Thirteen Colonies - New England and the Middle Southern region
  • The American Revolution - The Revolutionary War
  • Civil War Times - causes leading up to the war, reconstruction

We use the textbook, The United States: Making a New Nation (Harcourt) throughout the year as well as a variety of informational text and primary resources.
